Using drink bottles to save toilet water

Posted by DavidM in Reduce, re-use, recycle | 25 August 2006

I know you can read the title of the post two ways so to clarify - I mean save toilet water as in reduce usage of rather than as in collect. That wouldn't be nice.

I had bit of a shock this evening as my wife (who is reluctantly on the receiving end of my green campaign at home) held up two plastic lemonade bottles and said, "We'll keep these, fill them with water and put them in the toilet cistern to reduce the water we use with each flush".

You could have knocked me down with a feather. It's only a minor thing but she's gone from asking my sister why I've gone wierd (because I wanted a solar powered battery charger for my birthday) to suggesting water saving changes herself.

Just have to prise the Audi TT keys from her hands now.

Alternately, you could just place a brick in your cistern or any other large heavy object. That used to be the general advice.
