Starting the vegetable patch

I’ve never had the patience for gardening. I do projects – digging stuff up, filling in big holes, clearing our drainage ditch, that sort of thing. My wife however, will happily spend the afternoon planting, feeding, weeding and pruning.

But she likes flowers and I want vegetables. So I’ve taken over our small vegetable patch (about 12ft by 8ft) and if I manage it successfully this year I’ll extend so we can really start to live off our garden.

My first planting attempt resulted in some very fat slugs and a podgy wild rabbit. I was left with one Broccoli plant (the only vegetable my daughter eats), 10 mini sweet corn (the only vegetable my son eats) one carrot plant and a few yellow Spanish onions.

Fortunately my father-in-law is a proper garden (his seeds make it all the way to producing something). He brought up several trays of seedlings and most have survived my amateur care.

I haven’t exactly had a bumper crop (though the tomato plants are heavy with green baubles) but I’m learning and most importantly I’m enjoying it. I even had a long conversation comparing vegetable patches at a party recently.

I’m either getting greener or just older.

I would suggest the latter - Older. It's one the many things that happens when you reach a certain age, like suddenly enjoying Classical music when previously you hated it or having a snooze at the weekend mid afternoon !

Let's not get carried away!

Mind you I have been listening to more classical music - though only the popular stuff.

And I do like the occasional afternoon nap but I'm sure that's because I stay up late partying.

Hmm, maybe I should just resign myself to it.
