Solar panels available at Currys

The BBC reports today that Currys - the electrical retailer - is piloting the sale of solar panels in three of it's UK stores.

The panels sell for about £1,000 and Currys will do a free home assessment to make sure your house is suitable.

It's an encouraging move as high-street retailers need to be involved if solar panels are ever going to become mass market.

My problem is that I barely trust a Currys employee to advise me on TVs and DVD players, so I'm not sure I'd be comfortable with them designing a £9,000 solar installation in my home.

The graph in the article is particularly interesting - and encouraging.

During my recent hols in Spain, I discussed with the owner of the villa why they had not gone for solar power to generate the energy needed for the villa and pool.

No good explanation was provided.

Given that the sun is hot enough to allow the pool to be used for 8 months of the year, I would have expected to see a large number of buildings using solar panels, particularly when electricity is apparently far more expensive in Spain than the UK.

Perhaps Curry's should set-up shop in Spain !!
