From an Audi TT to a...

So far, all the changes I've been making to the family lifestyle have been small and relatively unintrusive.

But I've been thinking about my first big change.

At the moment we drive an Audi A3 and an Audi TT. Both have 1.8 litre engines and return just over and just under 30 miles to the gallon respectively. The TT is a lovely car but is becoming less practical as our children get bigger, especially wth the new law coming into force on child seats.

We've also started going camping during summer and typically for us have bought a large tent. Even with a roof box we barely get everything into the A3, so it's time for a bigger car.

My cunning plan is to buy a cheap pick-up truck or big 4x4. This gives us plenty of space but is hardly environmentally friendly, so the second step is to get it converted to run on bio-diesel.

I've looked around at the trucks and you can pick a decent one up for under £5k. Next I need to check out the availability of alternative fuel in my area.

Then the final, and hardest, part of the plan is persuading my wife to part with her beloved TT. You can tell she is a genuine Audi lover - she was less upset at the idea of an old pick-up truck running on chip-fat than she was at the thought of being seen in a BMW 320d!

I will believe you really are serious about the environment when you part with your TT and get a vehicle that runs on chip-fat !
