Kick-off Meeting
Posted by DavidM in RLN launch | 1 December 2005
We have just had our first session (accompanied by a couple of beers !) to go through what we need to do to get Real Life News up and running.
What was interesting, is that instead of coming away with a list of tasks that gets us to a point where we can launch the site, we have ended up with long list of questions that we will need to answer along the way.
For instance, we will need to create a members "terms of service" for our blog. But what should we say about the use of offensive language? Do we say anything? Obviously racially offensive language is not acceptable, but what is acceptable?
Having started to look around at the many football blogs, I came across ArseBlog for Arsenal fans. The site does not appear to have any specific policy on what is acceptable language and the comments or "arses" appear not to be moderated. For Real Life News we would feel too uncomfortable with these type of comments.
Having looked at the "terms of service" of various sites, I have settled on the guidelines used by Performancing which are crisp and to the point. Whilst they do not explicitly answer the questions I set out to answer and don't have a policy on profanity, the words "Be nice. Personal attacks, or flames are not welcome", does cover the approach we are looking for.
