Blogging is NOT so last year

I attended a course at the Oxford College of Marketing today on 'Cutting edge marketing techniques' for business. Or in English, how companies can improve their customer relationships using blogs, social networking sites and so on.
As well as Real Life News I've run blogs for large businesses so was a little worried this would be too basic but while I'm up on blogging the whole Facebook/MySpace thing has passed me by.
As it turns out it was a great refresher on social networking, gave me different perspectives on approaching the medium and came up with some great ideas for work.
Will McInnes from NixonMcInnes ran the day and did a top job.
But one thing struck me. One of Will's slides had a placard saying 'Blogging is so last year'. I've heard this around the blogosphere and from media consultants. Fortunately Will wasn't agreeing with the statement as I think it's a crock.
Blogging may no longer be the big thing in the inner geek circle but it is still permeating the mass market and business in particular. There are still relatively few businesses using blogging at all, let alone to good effect. Of the 10 companies represented on the course, none were already blogging and all could identify a wide range of ways they could improve their relationships with customers through blogs and other interactive services.
So blogging isn't last year, it's just become part of a wider social networking range of tools for people and businesses to communicate with.
