Google Maps for Mobile - My Location tool

Posted by DavidM in Interesting stuff | 7 December 2007

Last Wednesday Google announced the latest in a very long line of new tools.

Users of Google Maps for Mobile (GMM) have used the tool to find out how to get places and see what's around them. But they had to enter their starting position manually. My Location means the phone user now starts Google Maps, presses 0 and a blue dot appears in their location on the map.

You don't need GPS - it works by identifying the cell tower your phone is using.

The article doesn't say the areas it's available but from the numerous comments posted it seems to be available in most of the US and the UK but not India. It also only works on selected phones so it's worth checking the comments before trying it out.

I downloaded this the other week and the main problem I've found is that the level of accuracy is pretty poor!

I tried my home location and it was way out, also tried my office location and again showed my location a mile away from my actual locale.

Love the maps tho'!
